The AMTA-Vermont chapter is currently pursuing regulation of massage therapy in Vermont. How do you feel about regulation of massage therapy in Vermont?
In October 2010, massage therapists around Vermont appeared at the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) in Montpelier. Click here to read the Notice of Public Hearing from October 29, 2010.
At the beginning of 2011, OPR notified us that it "recommends that massage therapists not be subject to professional regulation in the State of Vermont." Click here to review the entire response from OPR.

Currently, Vermont is the only New England State that does not have regulation for the profession. It is however, the responsibility of practicing massage therapists to still abide by the laws of our country. AMTA members of Vermont are required to abide by the by-laws of the association and to practice within their "Scope of Practice."
If AMTA Massage Therapists refer to themselves as "LMT" (Licensed Massage Therapist) or "RMT" (Registered Massage Therapist), they need to list what "City", "Town" or "State" has issued their license or registration.
"CMT" (Certified Massage Therapist) means the massage therapist has over 500 hours of massage therapy schooling and has taken a test administered by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). This is the basic test required in most, but not all, regulated states.
Any complaints of crime regarding any massage therapists (AMTA members or non-AMTA members) in Vermont should be reported to local law enforcement for further investigation.
