Currently, Vermont is the only New England State that does not have regulation for the profession. It is however, the responsibilty of practicing massage therapists, to still abide by the laws of our country. AMTA members of Vermont are required by the by-laws of the association and to practice within their "Scope of Practice."
If an AMTA Massage Therapist refers to themselves as an "LMT" (Licensed Massage Therapist) or "RMT" (Registered Massage Therapist) they need to list what "City", "Town" or "State" they are licensed or registered on all advertising. "CMT" (Certified Massage Therapist) means the massage therapist has over 500 hours of massage therapy schooling and has taken a test before the National Certification Board (NCTMBA) which is the basic test required in most, but not all regulated states. This is nationally recognized in all 50 states.
Any complaints of crime regarding any massage therapists (AMTA members or non-AMTA members) in Vermont should be reported to your local law enforcement department for further investigation.
