Before doing anything, check out others’ listings. You will want to have prepared a brief bio and description for your online marketing that can be tailored just slightly to each site, creating uniqueness for each listing. Also, have a picture ready.

You will want to think of a username that you can repeat on these sites, something that makes you easily recognizable in repeat hits. And remember to keep a record of every username and password you create!

Make your own list of possible keywords. These will vary with each website—some will require you to choose from their list, some will allow you to type in your own. Have at least 10 ready; create prioritized descriptors of your style of work.

If you choose to put yourself onto any social networking site, be ready to check in on it/them at least a couple times a week. Just listing yourself won’t do you any good—you have to be active (and not all about business) for them to truly be of benefit.

Some of these listings take a while to appear— because the organization is verifying your information, or just because it is “free” (therefore not their top priority)… so be patient. Some listings may take a couple of weeks or longer before they are available.

And don’t go blind sitting at the computer for hours on end(!). Remember to take a break every 20-30 minutes.
